Paula Radcliffe is recovering from a freak calf injury after she was bitten by a dog during a training run in Monaco.

The marathon world record holder, who returned to training last month after giving birth to her son Raphael in September, was forced go to hospital for treatment after her calf went into a spasm after being attacked by the dog.

"Spent part of the morning at the hospital after being bitten by a dog," Radcliffe posted on her Twitter feed. "It was when I was running, the owner was an older gentleman who couldn't control the dog. I was stood still when it happened.

"Luckily it's not too bad, felt much worse as my calf went into spasm. My calf now feels like I have done a track workout three days in a row."

In 2003 Radcliffe was injured after a collision with a child on a bike, and in 2008 her Olympic preparations hit a setback when she was bitten by a spider a month before the Beijing Games.

Radcliffe is set to fly to the USA for high-altitude training and has her sights set on the World Athletics Championships in South Korea in August.
