Summary

Time Score

England kick off their November schedule against Australia at Twickenham with both sides under pressure to impress. An injury-ravaged and largely inexperienced England side will take to the field against a Wallabies side reeling from six defeats in their last seven games. Fly-half Jonny Wilkinson makes his first appearance for England in 18 months and his duel with Australian counterpart Matt Giteau is sure to go a long way to deciding this clash.

There's been plenty of discussion in the run up to this game about Martin Johnson's catastrophic injury problems, and indeed the side today will be much changed from what would be considered a full-strength line-up. But injury equals opportunity and the game will give the like of England World Cup-winning hooker Steve Thompson a chance to re-stake their test match claims.

Australia too aren't spared the injury bug, with first choice centre partnership Berrick Barnes and captain Sterling Mortlock are missing for the duration of the tour, so the midfield comprises the inexperienced Digby Ioane and the promising but often frustrating Quade Cooper .

Will Wilkinson's mastery of the Aussies continue or will the Wallabies exact some revenge for 2003 on this experimental England outfit? Kick off is at 2.30pm GMT and you can find all the action here, live.

Advance Australia Fair is belted out with gusto by the travelling fans and there must be a fair few of them in by that display, while God Save The Queen is delivered with the passion and vigour that you'd expect from a Twickenham crowd, and we're nearly ready for kickoff.

The atmosphere is hotting up at a gloomy but packed Twickenham, the pitch at HQ is laid out with a giant St George's cross that covers the length of the field as Australian team file out onto the field to muted applause.

The flame shooters erupt to announce the arrival of the England team, led out by captain Steve Borthwick and Twickenham erupts with it. As if on cue the sun has come out as the teams line up for the anthems.

Both sides are wearing poppies today and the ground falls silent for a minute's remembrance.

1 3 - 0

The man of the hour Johnny Wilkinson bounces the ball and kicks it long to get us underway. Genia kicks long to a clear and England will have a lineout just inside the Australia half. It's easily won and Hipkiss takes it in midfield but the ball is slowed down well and England will keep it tight at the 10m line. Gerraghty's chip through is gathered by Ashley-Cooper and cleared from inside the 22.

2

Thompson is two from two and it's spun out to Crane who is battered in the midfield. And how about that, Johnny Wilkinson is back in the pocket just inside the 10m line and he drills the drop goal. Great statement of intent from England and Wilkinson.

3

Ashley-Cooper sends a dreadful kick over the top and England will snuff out an Aussie attack, Wilkinson clears, but aimlessly. Iaone tries to counter but the ball is knocked on and England have a sfcrum.

4

Solid scrum from England but the pass to Hipkiss from Wilkinson is poor, England ship it wide at halfway but it goes into touch off an Australian hand. Strong lineout from England and the driving mall takes them up 10 metres

5

The kick over the top is gathered and Mitchell counters, he's getting nowhere though and Cooper clears to Wilkinson who calls the mark and clears it.

6

Comfortable lineout from Australia and they move up to the 10m line but Smith is penalised for going in off his feet.

7

Wilkinson brings play up to the 22 with a kick for touch and Borthwick secures the lineout.

8 6 - 0

Monye comes into the line and he blasts through but is stopped inside the 22, but Australia are penalised for playing the ball on the ground and this is kickable.

9

Wilkinson adopts that legendary kicking stance and calmly slots over the penalty, strraight through the middle from out wide on the left.

10

Good chase from the kickoff for the Wallabies and Wilkinson is pressured at the clearance and it's a poor touch. The ensuing lineout is well handled by England though and they get the steal from Borthwick and clear.

11

Poor tactical kicking from Australia so far they aren't getting anywhere with it. Another dreadful lineout from Australia and it's stolen and cleared deep into the 22 from Wilkinson.

12

Banahan has his first chance to run at the Aussises but he's dealt with and Mitchell kicks into space. A bit of aerial tennis is ended when Monye finds a superb touch, Australia tack it quick but great work in defence from England leads to a penalty on halfway.

13

Wilkinson is feeling it today and he'll have a go from halfway in front of the posts.

14

Johnny easily had the length but his radar is just slightly off and he just nicks the woodwork. Australia are getting battered on the floor and they're really on the back foot.

15

First scrum of the day and Smith is making a nuisance of himself at England's put-in and it's pressured into a knock on from Care.

16

Solid scrum from Australia and they're just trying to keep it in hand at the moment to regain their composure. Banahan's kick clear is countered well through Smith and Cooper and they're up to the 22.

17

Promising for Australia but Genia's run is smothered by Wilkinson and he's penalised for not releasing.

18

Misfiring lineout from England and Australia keep it in hands up to the 10m line but England drive them backwards thanks to a monster hit from Deacon and Moody

19

Giteau's kick appears to have gone out on the full but the touch judge rules it's been taken out by Banahan and Australia have a platform

20 6 - 5

Australia burrow through up to a few metres out after Ashley-Cooper breaks through, England can't organise the defence quickly enough and Genia waltzes through the huge gap and scores. That's poor defending from England.

21

Giteau's kick from out wide on the left is dragged wide to the right and the score remains 6-5. Great chase from England at the restart and Palu is driven backwards inside the 22 by Cueto and Cooper clears short to the 22

22

The referee's unhappy with the lineout and we'll have it retaken, where Croft makes an excellent one-handed take at the front.

23

Slow ball from England as Australia look to spoil the ball and they're slowly rumbling forward.

24

Care out to Wilkinson who sends the high hanging ball to Banahan who palms it down to Monye and England have the platform inside the 22.

25 9 - 5

Hipkiss is stopped just short and Care tries the cross-kick which Moody nearly gets to, but it's flapped down and Croft touches down, but it's knocked on and we'll go back for a penalty in front of the posts for Australia infringing on the floor.

26

No worries from Wilkinson, he could hit that in his sleep.

27

Geraghty clears from the kickoff but it's poor and Ioane can gather outside the 22, good work on the floor gets the turnover and it's clear. It's infield though and Genia scythes though on the short side, but he knocks the ball on in contact and England have the scrum on the 22.

28

Good shove from England and the Australian scrum is penalised for collapsing. The penalty count is 6-0 to England so far, it's a telling reflection of the respective performances.

29

Another good grab at the lineout from Croft but the maul isn't going anywhere and its all very slow now

30

It's finally cleared to Mitchell and Matt Banahan ignores the ref's warnings and gives away the first England penalty of the game for hnads on the floor

31

Palu batters his way through from the lineout and Australia up to just short of the 22 but Moody rips it in the tackle and England can clear up to halfway.

32

Cooper doges a few tacklers but he's not secured the ball and it squirts out and Hipkiss will slow it down by taking it in to contact.

33

Ioane makes yards up the left hand touchline and Australia make it into the England half, but once again they're penalised at the breakdown and another attack is stifled.

34

England miscue a lineout for the first time but it's knocked on by Moore and it's an England scrum. Good solid scrum and Hipkiss receives it in midfield. Croft is battered out wide but England aren't giving it away.

35

The Bath prop Wilson carries it forward but he's penalised for holding on .

36

Solid scrum from Australia and Giteau and Cooper are interchanging at 10 here for Australia. Moore bursts forward and he offloads superbly to Robinson and he's in acres of space and makes it to the five metre line. Australia have the advantage but they can't do anything with it, mainly thanks to some superb defensive work by Wilkinson driving the runner back.

37

Australia will have a scrum on the five metre line.

38

Giteau bursts through from the scrum but Wilkinson once again does superbly in defence by staying on his feet and winning the penalty, that's a big moment in this game.

39

Dreadful throw by Thompson at the lineout but Palu can't gather and he spills it. England will keep it close now.

40

Geraghty boots the ball out on the full but it's the end of the half.

Australia trail at half time then, thanks to the ominously accurate boot of Johnny Wilkinson. Australia have looked dangerous on attack at times and they have scored the try, but they've lacked intensity at the breakdown and the England defence has been as smothering as it has been effective. It's all in the balance here though and something special from either side could easily turn the game.

40

Good fielding of the kickoff from Cueto and England can clear through Care. Moody chases well and Croft secures the ball at the 10m line. Odd chip from Wilkinson but Cueto gets there and Australia battle for it on the floor.

41

Monye chases the kick from Geraghty well but he knocks it on inside the Australian half and it's a scrum.

42

Good scrum from Australia and Genia kicks well into space and Monye can't get there. It dribbles out inside the 22 and England are pushed back.

43

Australia competing well at the lineout but Croft gets it and Wilkinson clears long and infield. Mitchell takes it up to the 22 and Australia start to probe well. Smith breaks well inside the 22 and he's just tackled at the last minute. Palu is stopped just short and Australia are powering forward

44

Giteau is smothered by Wilkinson and the ball is hacked on as it's fumbled by Australia but it's going back for a penalty out wide on the left

45 9 - 8

Elsom was selfish out wide there and he went for the try when he had a man out wide, but Giteau's kick is good and it's not a wasted chance for Ausralia

46

Cooper clears up to the 10m line from the restart and England have the lineout

47

Banahan comes in off his wing but he's smothered, Geraghty takes it into contact but spills it and Australia have the advantage. The ball is taken on up to halfway but England infringe at the breakdown and Giteau kicks to the corner.

48

Solid lineout for Australia and Ioane and Cooper takes them within five metres, but Moody does great work on the floor to pounce on in and Wilkinson clears well from his in-goal area.

49

Another solid Australia lineout and England are defending outside the 22 again, Mitchell takes a quick pop but he's driven back, England are defending well but Cooper's light feet are causing problems.

50

Excellent from Moody again as he stays on his feet and wins the penalty again on the 22.

51

Big rolling maul from England and they're over halfway and up to the 10m line. Geraghty springs to life and dances through the defence, he spills it in contact but it goes backwards.

52

Monye comes into the line and he does well not to be shepherded into touch, Wilkinson goes for the cross kick but it goes out on the full.

53

Moody nearly gets to Cooper's clearance and Cueto does well to field it, but Geraghty sends a sacrificial pass that Monye fumbles and it's hacked on.

54

Mitchell gathers the kick and he grubbers through for Ashley-Cooper to chase but it's too long and it's out of play for a 22 drop out.

55

Australia really upping the intensity, Giteau chips through and Monye bobbles the ball, he clears it and it's partly charged down and Giteau gathers, the ball isn't coming out of the ruck though and it'll be an Australian scrum.

56

Great hands from Australia and Mitchell breaks through, Genia wriggles through past Monye to the five metre line. Ioane tries to wriggle over the line but he somehow loses the ball and Palu knocks it on in the in-goal. Big let off for England.

57

England will have the put in five metres out. Good work by Australia and England are penalised for taking the scrum down, Bell being the infringer. Giteau will go for three.

58

Giteau strokes over the kick from out wide at the right and Australia lead for the first time.

59

Short kickoff form England superbly gathered by Moody, but Geraghty kicks straight to Mitchell and it's cleared to Banahan. Banahan chases well but he's injured himself in the process.

60 9 - 11

Monye takes a great pass from Geraghty out wide but he slips and is marshalled outside the 10m line

61

Slow ball from England here and they're just trying to suck in defenders but the line is strong.

62

Excellent defence from Australia and Smith makes a superb tackle on Croft, driving him back, and England are penalised for holding on

63

All Australia this half and the delayed ball from Cooper is spilled by Smith, England counter through Haskell who breaks a tackle up to halfway.

64

Wilkinson chips superbly into space, gathers and makes an outrageous offload to Hodgson who passes to Monye, Wilkinson takes a shot at a drop goal but it's wide and Australia counter. Some ping-pong ensues before Wilkinson makes a good clearance to halfway.

65

Poor lineout from Australia but they hold onto it and Australia reset at halfway. Cooper's big kick is fielded well by Cueto and England are throwing it around in their 22. Wilkinson is nearly clean through but Giteau's ankle tap slows him down and Ceuto clears very long to Ashley-Cooper, who clears to halfway

66

Great cross kick from WIlkinson, Croft gathers and offloads well to Bell does well to move up the right wing, England really upping their game now and their inside the 10m line.

67

Good hands from Erinle as he offloads under pressure but it's judged to be forward..

68

Scruffy lineout from Australia but Giteau's bouncing kick is fielded by Erinle who does well to hold on.

69

Superb hit on Banahan by Elsom and it's turned over, Genia kicks over the top and Wilkinson just gets to it inside the 5 and it's cleared.

70

Australia attack out wide and it's a fantastic move from Ashley-Cooper who comes into the line out wide on the right, he drives through Monye and Cueto on touchline and soemhow powers over the line, dragging three tacklers with him, incredible individual effort.

72 9 - 16

Great kick from Giteau and Australia extend the lead.

73 9 - 18

Another great kickoff from Wilkinson and Moody gathers it and England are up to the 22 but its slow ball. Lawes' first carry is a rough one, he's driven back and loses the ball in contact. Australia kick deep to Banahan who has plenty of time but slices the clearance to touch.

74

Great hands from Erinle and Monye to get Cueto through but he's marshalled well, it's all getting a bit loose now as England attack desperately.

75

England up to the 10m line and Monye tries to inject some pace but Australia are holding firm at the moment, Moody's nice offload is fumbled by Croft and it's an Australian scrum.

76

Australia in no hurry now, they're looking to lose this out. Big kick from Giteau which Monye is forced to clear to touch.

77

Superb work from Lawes who somehow steals the ball from the maul and it's cleared upfield. Giteau is nearly tackled but he offloads to Mitchell in the 22, he's caught though and it's an England penalty, they're going to the corner.

78

A good drive from the Australians, pushing the English maul back, but it's another penalty and it's another kick to the corner.

79

The Australian lineout defence is excellent and they England forwards are going backwards. Wilkinson tries to spark something but England look defeated here and Australia don't look like breaking

80

England battering the Australian line but they're getting no where. For some inexplicable reason Geraghty chips over the top, Giteau calls the mark and boots it into touch, and Australia have the win.

A fantastic second half revival from Australia there, England were battered in the second half and inexperience on the home side's part told, particularly at the end. England played well in the first half and the performance of some of the replacements in the second half, particularly Paul Hodgson was encouraging. That said, there seemed to be a lack of cutting edge from England and they rarely looked like cutting through the Australian defence.

Australia on the other hand will be ecstatic at the Man Of The Match performance from young scrum half Will Genia and the composure of young centre Quade Cooper as they cut out the penalties and started to keep hold of the ball in the second half.

So Australia are a quarter of the way to their Grand Slam objective, whereas England will have to lick their wounds and probably consider some new backline options for their next game against Argentina.

Thanks for joining us and be sure to stick around for Wales v New Zealand live from the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff at 17.15 GMT,
