Scotland will be looking for a first-ever victory over New Zealand when they play host to the World Cup holders at Murrayfield on Sunday.

They have faced the All Blacks 28 times in total, and only twice have they managed to avoid defeat. The Scots remarkably held the Kiwis to a scoreless draw before a crowd of 70,000 fans at Murrayfield in January, 1964. They repeated the feat some 19 years later when, despite being outscored by three tries to one, the Scots claimed a 25-25 draw thanks in no small part to the goal-kicking of fullback Peter Dods, who landed five penalties. Two drop goals from fly-half John Rutherford also proved key.

Since then, though, the Scots have suffered 16 successive defeats at the hands of the Kiwis. Many of the defeats have been of the heavy variety, with the Scots' nadir undoubtedly a 69-20 capitulation in Carisbrook in 2000.

Jonah Lomu scored a hat-trick on that occasion, while Tana Umaga bagged a brace but the 2010 side came close to emulating that vintage when they won 49-3 in the last meeting between the two sides. They scored seven tries with Hosea Gear and Mils Muliaina both grabbing braces while Dan Carter kept the scoreboard ticking over with the boot.
