Hurricanes lock James Broadhurst has re-committed to the Wellington side for another two seasons. Making his debut for the side in 2010, Broadhurst had played a large role for the Hurricanes and was excited to sign on until the end of the 2017 season.

Currently leading the Super Rugby table, despite their first loss of the season against the Waratahs on Saturday, the Hurricanes have had their best start to the season in several years as they made an eight match unbeaten run.

"I love this team, I love being a Hurricane, and in a way I see the next couple of years as a real opportunity to step up," Broadhurst said. "I'm also excited by the new competition format coming in next year, so to be involved in that during its early stages will bring a fresh challenge to an already exciting competition."

Coach Chris Boyd said Broadhurst was one of the "Young Turks" of the team whose position in the Hurricanes was crucial beyond the 2015 season.

"Broady is part of that next wave of leadership coming through, so this signing is not only important for him, it's massive for us. We've got some young locks around him at the moment, and along with looking after his own game, he'll be charged with the growth and development of those guys as well."

This will be pleasing news for New Zealand rugby as they face the continuing problem of a player exodus following the World Cup with several players such as Colin Slade and Chris Piutau moving to Europe at the end of the 2015 season.
