Rugby World Cup preview: Argentina vs. Tonga

October 3, 2015

Argentina are expected to make it out of Pool C alongside New Zealand, but they go into Sunday's clash below Tonga in third, with both teams recording a win and a defeat so far. A positive result in Leicester is therefore a must as Daniel Hourcade's side look to build on a positive performance against Georgia last time out and stride towards the last eight. Tonga, meanwhile, have seen their campaign reinvigorated by victory over Namibia. But can they back that up with another performance against the Pumas, just five days later?

Team news

Argentina will start Sunday's game with a new-look centre combination after coach Hourcade put his faith in Jeronimo De la Fuente and Matias Moroni to replace Juan Martin Hernandez and Marcelos Bosch. In all Hourcade has made six changes to the side that beat Georgia in Gloucester, with Ramiro Herrera, Guido Petti, Pablo Matera and Leonardo Senatore also starting.

Tonga coach Mana Otai has made six changes to the side that beat Namibia in Exeter, picking the oldest side in World Cup history in the process. The starting XV's average age of 31 years and 38 days beats the previous record -- held by Samoa -- by 34 days. Elvis Taoine, Halani 'Aulika, Tukulua Lokotui, Kurt Morath, Fetu'u Vainikolo and captain Nili Latu are the players who come in. Jack Ram -- who scored two tries in the win over Namibia -- does not even make the bench against the Pumas.

Key head-to-head

Argentina go into the match with a brand new centre combination. Moroni and De La Fuente have never played together at international level before, and they are sure to have their hands full playing against Siale Piutau and Sione Piukala. The former, in particular, is a threat with ball in hand having made 76 metres from seven carries so far in the World Cup. The Pumas will be confident their new pairing will shine, but they will need to assert themselves on the contest early.

Key stats

*Argentina and Tonga have never previously played a Test against one another.

*The match will be Argentina's first against Pacific Island opposition since a 28-12 home defeat to Samoa 10 years ago. Horacio Agulla, on the bench, scored a try in that game.

*Tonga have only played once previously against South American opposition, beating Chile 32-30 in Santiago in 2010.

Odds

Argentina are heavy favourites to get the win in Leicester with Unibet offering them at 1/17. Tonga are longer shots at 8/1. However, if you think the Tongans will score first, you can get 17/2 that wing Telusa Veainu will notch the game's opening try.

Weather

Leicester is set for a burst of sunshine at kick-off, with a temperature of around 14 degrees Celsius. The conditions should mean there is plenty of opportunity for running rugby from both sides.

Prediction

Argentina may sit third in Pool C ahead of Sunday's clash, but they were unlucky against the All Blacks and superb in the second half against Georgia. On a near-perfect day for rugby in Leicester, expect them to get the win they need to take a firm grip on second place.
