Danny Cipriani's move to Wasps 'misguided' - Steve Diamond

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond has claimed Danny Cipriani is "a little bit misguided" if he thinks a switch to Wasps will kick-start his England career.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that Cipriani would take advantage of a break clause in his Sale contract to return to Wasps at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old has impressed since joining the Sharks in 2013, but ultimately missed out on a place in England's Rugby World Cup squad.

Relocating to Coventry will not necessarily move Cipriani up in Eddie Jones' thinking according to his current boss, though.

Diamond told Sky Sports News: "There's no point having someone here who wants to be somewhere else. We gave a couple of players options like that.

"Danny had been thinking hard and fast - his old club Wasps are similar to us in the league but they have got a lot of ambition by the looks of things, or so some people think. So he exercised the option this week.

"To be honest it came as a little bit of a surprise because we thought he had decided to stay, but it's his prerogative and he chose to take that option.

"His reasons are very clear. He thinks that by going to Wasps, he'll play for England. I feel it's a little bit misguided.

"I think Danny has been a fantastic player for Sale Sharks and for England when he got back into the reckoning playing for Sale, and I think there is a bit of a misconception if you go to a club in London or the south - and they are actually playing in the Midlands - there is a bigger opportunity."
