Kobayashi in the wars

Sauber had a poor start to the weekend when Kamui Kobayashi twice brought the first practice session to a halt.

He was at fault on the first occasion when he ran over the kerb at the fast turn 11 and hit a corner cone, damaging the front of his car and being forced to limp back to the pits. Michael Schumacher was less than impressed as he was on course for the fastest lap to that point but his time was ruled out as marshals cleared debris from the track.

No sooner had Kobayashi's car been fixed than it was again in the wars, but this time he was blameless as a wing appeared to break on its own in the middle of the supports as he approached the braking zone for turn 3.

Concerned FIA official Jo Bauer visited the Swiss team's garage for an explanation, but Sauber team members are not sure what caused the problems. It is believed it has only three spare front wings remaining for the rest of the Melbourne weekend.

Kobayashi remained upbeat. "Of course I would have liked to do more laps, but the rain in the second session did not help. However, I still got a good feeling for the track."
