Built on Edwin Flack field, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, known for commercial purposes as AAMI Park, was the city's first purpose-built rectangular ground. With three burgeoining football codes in the city deflecting some attention from the traditionally strong arenas of AFL and cricket, the stadium was completed in mid 2010 and housed the Melbourne Rebels for their inaugural season of Super Rugby. The Rebels shared the tenancy of the ground with NRL franchise Melbourne Storm and two A-League soccer teams, Melbourne Heart and Victory. The stadium offered a point of difference from other grounds in the city, notably the MCG, Docklands Stadium and Princes Park, all of which have oval fields best suited to Aussie Rules or cricket.
