Bob Dwyer coached Sydney club Randwick to four Sydney championship wins before becoming Australia coach from 1982-83 and then against from 1988 onwards. He coached Australia to victory in the 1991 World Cup where they defeated England in the final.

Dwyer then moved to Leicester Tigers at the turn of professionalism in 1996 replacing Chalkie White. He won the Pilkington Cup in 1997 but his harsh tone with his players led to his nickname 'Barb Dwyer.' It was around this time that he had a public spat with Austin Healey before being replaced by Dean Richards.

In 1998 Dwyer took the coaching post at Bristol Rugby and the club returned to the Premiership at the first time of asking. In 2000 Dwyer left Bristol but departed advocating Bristol's quest for greatness earmarking them as a future Leicester Tigers of the game.

In 2001 Dwyer became headcoach of Super Rugby's Waratahs and took them to the semi-final in 2002. He resigned in 2003 and became the New South Wales' development officer.
