Dourthe made his international bow against Romania in Bucharest, aged 18. A product of Dax, he would go on to win 33 Test caps.
Dourthe tasted Five Nations success in 1967 and 1968, when France won the Grand Slam, although he played only one game, against Wales in Cardiff. A fiery figure, his imposing tackling and all-or-nothing attitude made him a feared opponent throughout northern hemisphere rugby.
His son, Richard, also ascended to Test recognition with France and played in the 1999 Rugby World Cup final defeat to Australia.
