A wretched day for Wales on and off the pitch as their 63-6 thrashing by Australia, who ran in 12 tries, was made worse when infighting broke out within their squad at a post-match dinner. Cardiff centre Mike Hall left the event with a cut hand and was followed by hooker Kevin Phillips whose blazer was clearly ripped. "It was the most disgraceful scene I've witnessed from a group of players," said a Queensland official. "No wonder Welsh rugby is in such a mess." As for the match, the Daily Express reported: "The players are a product of years of neglect and second-rate coaching. Wales must realise they lack the players and coaches of quality."

1962
There was undisguised anger from the Lions after their 3-0 loss to South Africa in the Durban Test as they felt a perfectly good pushover try was disallowed by referee Ken Carlson. They trailed to a Keith Oxlee penalty goal when they sent the Spingboks back into full retreat back over their line and Welsh lock Keith Rowlands pounced on the loose ball. "There was a lot of noise around me at the crucial moment," Carlson told the Johannesburg Sunday Times. "I looked around momentarily and lost sight of the ball. Under the laws there was nothing I could do but award a five-yard scrum. I am quite happy about it." Lions kicker John Willcox, who was struggling with a sprained ankle for most of the match, missed three penalty attempts.

On their first tour of South Africa, the All Blacks levelled their series with the Springboks with a thrilling 7-6 success in the second Test. The game was the first international ever staged at Johannesburg's Ellis Park.
