Brumbies midfielder Christian Lealiifano will play provincial rugby for Waikato in this season's ITM Cup.

The 22-year-old will join the province after a Super 14 season that was blighted by an injury picked up after six games in Canberra.

The Aucklander, able to play at fly-half and centre, will likely provide cover for Stephen Donald should the Chiefs pivot secure All Black selection for forthcoming Tests against Ireland and Wales.

"It is a unique opportunity to have a proven, quality Super 14 player from outside our region wanting to play for Waikato," Waikato coach Chris Gibbes said."He is keen to carry on his good Super rugby form into our national provincial rugby competition.

"Christian is a skillful player, and he is the type of guy who I'm sure will help inspire a lot of young players in our squad."
