Reds flanker Liam Gill has joined up with the Super Rugby franchise for the remainder of the season after being freed from the Australia under-20 squad.

The 18-year-old was in Italy for Australia's Junior World Championships campaign but he will return to Brisbane after the Australian Rugby Union agreed to release him following an injury to Reds flanker Beau Robinson at the weekend. Robinson will undergo surgery on a dislocated elbow that will rule him out for around a month.

"We said when the squad was first selected that if injuries occurred at the Super Rugby level we would look at assisting the provinces by releasing players back to them from the Under 20s squad," said ARU chief executive officer John O'Neill.

"Clearly the Reds were in that situation following the unfortunate injury to Beau Robinson and we moved quickly to ensure that Liam Gill would return from Europe immediately."

Reds coach Ewen McKenzie said that the young flanker would not be considered for their match against the Brumbies on Saturday due to the amount of travelling he has done and the lack of preparation he will have had with the squad.
