Wallabies hopeful Berrick Barnes made a successful comeback in club rugby on Saturday, playing 80 minutes in Sydney University's Shute Shield rout of Penrith.

The 25-year-old playmaker started at fullback and bagged a try in his side's 62-7 victory, having opted to take an extended break from playing at the end of the Super Rugby season.

Barnes was diagnosed with footballers' migraine after suffering a number of head knocks while on duty with the Waratahs but is now ready to continue his comeback with the Students.

Robbie Deans' Wallabies kick off their Tri-Nations campaign on Saturday against South Africa in Sydney but Barnes is content to take one step at a time prior to the Rugby World Cup.

"It was good to get back out there with the boys," he told AAP. "I felt fine in the head. I was a little bit rusty so obviously I needed to get some footy. But, other than that, I'm pretty happy with it all and the head was fine.

"I'll be sticking around here with Uni, I'd say, and I've got to get some footy under my belt yet before any of the other stuff."
