James O'Connor is reportedly facing the axe for next weekend's Tri-Nations showdown with the All Blacks after missing the Wallabies' World Cup squad announcement on Thursday.

The 21-year-old winger failed to show up for the event in Sydney and his non-appearance was initially put down to "personal reasons". However, according to the Daily Telegraph, O'Connor was spotted out drinking with a number of his international team-mates on Wednesday night and it is believed that he slept through his alarm the following morning. As a result, he missed a scheduled team meeting at 8am, the team photo shoot and the official squad announcement.

An Australian Rugby Union (ARU) spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: "James informed us on the morning of the squad announcement he was unable to be present. We have requested James provide us with a full explanation for his non-appearance. Until such time (as) we have received that explanation, we are not in a position to comment further."
