Wallabies flyer Drew Mitchell looks set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines after limping off against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Mitchell was making his first start in 11 months for the Wallabies but he ruptured a tendon in his ankle and was forced off the field in the 34th minute. The winger missed the majority of the Waratahs' Super Rugby campaign with a similar ankle injury.

"The healing that needs to be done is pretty significant," Mitchell told the AAP. "I'm not too sure if I'll be lacing them up in the next 12 months or so."

Mitchell was one of Australia's key players going into the 2011 World Cup but a hamstring injury cut his participation short. He now faces a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the new 2013 Super Rugby season and the subsequent Test series against the British & Irish Lions.

In better news for the Wallabies, Quade Cooper should be fit to face South Africa on September 8 despite scans revealing that he has suffered a small fracture to his tibia.
