Wallabies coach Robbie Deans is set to play a key role in Australia's campaign to win the Rugby League World Cup final in England.

New Zealand defeated the Kangaroos 34-20 in the 2008 final in Brisbane, and Australia coach Tim Sheens is so determined to end the Kiwis' reign that he has sought advice from Deans about preparing a team on tour in Britain and Ireland.

The pair were spied talking in Sydney two weeks ago, when it was assumed that Sheens would be helping the Wallabies in their preparations to face the British & Irish Lions. But the truth is that Deans, a New Zealander, has been asked for advice that may end the reign of his compatriots.

"The trip they have to the UK is something we do often in rugby, and [the Kangaroos] will spend a bit of time in Cardiff and Limerick, which are venues I'm familiar with," Deans told News Ltd's Rugby Gold. "He was tapping into the benefit of our experience I guess . . . hopefully I offered some value."
