All Blacks IRB World Cup winner Williams trod a similar path to Folau when he left Canterbury during the 2008 National Rugby League season to join French side Toulon.
But what has made Folau's transition so impressive is that he spent two years playing AFL in between leaving the Brisbane Broncos and joining the Waratahs.
Sydney Roosters back-rower Williams said Folau sits in an elite group of players and fully deserves his call-up to the Wallabies.
"He has done well in rugby so far. It's exciting to see him play," Williams said. "He is one of those guys that has that thing you can't really coach. I wish I had that thing. Few players have that, just being able to beat players with ease like that. It will be very interesting to see how he goes (against the British & Irish Lions). I'm pretty sure he will do well."
Folau has been included in coach Robbie Deans' 25-man squad for the three-Test Lions tour after just 11 games with the Waratahs.
