Australia's Under-20s side has lost their fifth-place semi-final play-off to Argentina 22-15 in France.

Australia opened the scoring in the 13th minute through a Silatolu Latu try, which was converted by Luke Burton, however Argentina hit back to lead 10-7 at half-time after a penalty, try and conversion, all through Patricio Fernandez.

A Burton penalty early in the second stanza saw Australia again take the lead, but Argentina replied almost immediately with a five-pointer to German Schulz, which was also converted.

Australia remained in contention when Pettowa Paraka scored 18 minuted into the second half, but two missed drop-goal attempts would ultimately prove costly as Fernandez scored his second try nine minutes from full-time to seal the result.

Australia captain Curtis Browning said: "It is hard to put your thing on any one thing in a game like that, it was 80 minutes and there were a lot of mistakes from us. Can't fault the effort of the boys once again but we will work forward and hopefully finish the tournament on a good note. No one likes losing and to find ourselves back in the same play-off game as last year is pretty gutting but hopefully we can finish off the tournament with a win."

Argentina will next play France, which edged out Ireland 9-8 in the other fifth-place semi-final, while Australia will meet Ireland to decide seventh and eighth place.
