Former Wallabies winger Digby Ioane has been ordered to complete a court diversion program but he escaped conviction over an assault at a Melbourne pub.

Ioane, 28, fronted Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday to answer an assault charge resulting from an incident in Prahran on March 9. He must face the court again in October, to prove he has complied with the judge's instructions, before he join French Top 14 side Stade Francais on a massive two-year deal at the end of the year.

The Reds suspended the winger for a week in March after details of the scuffle involving his brother and another patron emerged. He then missed a court date in June, leading police to issue a warrant for his arrest six days before the second Test against the British & Irish Lions in Melbourne.

The 36-Test winger sustained a shoulder injury in the second Lions Test, and he won't feature for the Wallabies again this season before heading to Paris.
