Former Brumbies coach Jake White is reportedly set for a swift return to the Super Rugby stage as the Sharks' director of rugby.

The former South Africa coach sensationally quit the Brumbies earlier this week with two years left on his contract and just a couple of months after steering them to the Super Rugby final. Reports suggest the Australian Rugby Union's decision to appoint Ewen McKenzie as Wallabies coach prompted his surprise departure but it appears the highly-rated coach is unlikely to be out of work for long.

The Sharks' chief executive John Smit, who was Springbok captain when White coached the Boks to the 2007 World Cup crown, has responded to media speculation regarding his former boss by hinting that he may find a home at the Durban-based franchise although such a move would appear to jeopardise the future of current director of rugby Brendan Venter.

"Here at The Sharks we have a definite plan for our team. Could Jake White add value? Of course he can," Smit said in a statement. "He is a very successful coach with an amazing track record. We would welcome an opportunity to engage with him, should it so arise."

Both Sport24 and the Die Burger newspaper are reporting that White's appointment is imminent with Venter tipped to move into a consultancy role similar to that which he has with Premiership side Saracens.
