Australia impress in winning regional title

Australia have won the Oceania Women's Sevens Championship in Queensland, winning six matches without defeat and conceding just 22 points. Australia defeated Fiji 22-10 in the final, with Ellia Green scoring four tries as the tournament hosts overcame big hits and great changes of speed from their opponents.

"The girls worked hard for the win with a strong squad performance, supported by a professional approach, with all 12 players contributing to the final result," coach Tim Walsh said. "Despite the win, there are still things to work on ahead of the opening of the IRB World Series later this year.

"This tournament highlighted for me that Fiji is definitely one to watch in the future, with their entertaining style that the country is known for."

Australia opened their campaign with a 26-0 win against Fiji before producing clinical performances to defeat World Series and World Cup champions New Zealand 19-7, Papua New Guinea 48-0 and Samoa 40-5 to secure top billing for the finals. Australia then produced another clinical and professional performance to beat Samoa again in the semi-finals, while Fiji overcame New Zealand in the second qualifier.
