Springbok team-mates die within days of each other

Martiens Louw and Robbie Barnard, who played together for Transvaal and South Africa, have died just over a week apart. Louw died in Pretoria on October 12 and Barnard eight days later.

Barnard played 12 times for South Africa but his only official Test appearance was as a replacement for Piston van Wyk against New Zealand at Newlands in 1970. With Louw, he was picked for the infamous tour of Australia in 1971 which was marred by sometimes violent protests. Although Barnard did not play in the Tests, Louw's only two full caps came in that series.

Louw was a Transvaal selector and also coached locally.
