Scott Johnson admits he is "tired of being good losers" after Scotland failed to punish Australia for a mistake-riddled second half as they lost 21-15 to the Wallabies at Murrayfield.

Scotland were much-improved from last weekend's hammering to South Africa but were unable to score the converted try they needed late on to steal a famous victory, even though Christian Leali'ifano lost his nerve from the kicking tee in the closing stages. But with the next international fixture for Scotland next year's Six Nations Johnson will have had many reasons to have been optimistic, none more so than how his side stayed in contention with Australia throughout - and even went in at half-time trailing by a solitary point.

Greig Laidlaw kicked all the points for Scotland, who will also be concerned that they once again failed to cross the whitewash against an elite opponent. But the home side were characteristically committed throughout and Johnson was once again left to reflect on the positives.

"I think this will give the boys good character, we will get the right people on the pitch and they can only get better from here," he said.

"I can't quibble with the effort. I thought the effort was first class. We let ourselves down a little bit with our execution, but there's much to like about what we did.

"It's an understatement to say that Folau's try before half-time was a killer blow. We were disappointed to concede that try when we did, we were sloppy and they made us pay.

"I'm tired of being good losers but once again there were positives to take from this match and we need to make sure now we learn best we can ahead of the Six Nations next year."
