The Australian Rugby Union has become one of the first major sporting bodies in the world to display a gay cup in their trophy cabinet.

The ARU has put the Bingham Cup, also known as the Gay Rugby World Cup, was won by Sydney Convicts and they handed it over to the ARU to put in its trophy cabinet where it will remain until it is next up for grabs in August 2014.

"In terms of Australian sport, they (Sydney Convicts) are obviously a great team in their own right," Bingham Cup ambassador David Pocock told AAP. "But I think in terms of Australian sport, the advocacy they do around raising awareness of homophobia and really challenging it within sport is so important.

"It's so important that we have athletes in Australia speaking out about that."
