Ewen McKenzie has met Andrew Fifita, sparking speculation the Kangaroos Rugby League World Cup winner will return to rugby union when he comes off contract with National Rugby League (NRL) club Cronulla Sharks in 2015.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday that Fifita and his new agent, Greg Willett, met McKenzie in a Sydney hotel last weekend, when, the paper quoted a "source" as saying, "they were overheard discussing the possibility of Fifita going back to rugby … it was definitely a topic of conversation".

An Australian Rugby Union spokeswoman confirmed the meeting took place, but she could not say whether McKenzie would continue his interest.

Fifita is regarded among the leading props in the NRL, developing into one of the stars of Australia's pack in the recent Rugby League World Cup victory, but he played union as a teenager in Griffith, New South Wales, and earned a spot in the Brumbies' junior development squad. He said this year before making his State of Origin debut for the Blues that he had "loved" playing rugby and chose league only because he did not want to live in Canberra.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Fifita's current contract with the Sharks was worth $370,000 but "he could possibly command double that amount on the open market".
