Quade Cooper has been cleared of a serious neck injury but remains a doubt for Queensland's opening Super Rugby match against the Brumbies on Saturday 22.

Cooper was stretchered off with his neck in a brace after the Reds' 18-13 loss to Melbourne Rebels on Friday evening after a tackle from Lopeti Timani. The injury occurred when his chin impacted on his own chest after Timani struck him from behind during an offload.

X-rays cleared the fly-half of any fracture, and initial results from an early MRI scan are also positive.

''He's stiff and he's sore but he's mobile and at home,'' Reds coach Richard Graham said. ''We really have to see how the spasm settles down in the next 24 to 48 hours.

''But we're confident he'll be right to play.''
