Fotu Auelua will make a timely return against the big and physical Sharks in Canberra on Saturday, the Brumbies' back-row enforcer named to play his first Super Rugby match of the season after overcoming the knee injury he sustained during the trials. Auelua's selection at blindside flanker is the only change to starting side humbled by the Crusaders in Christchurch last week.

Brumbies rugby director Laurie Fisher said he became convinced the 120kg Auelua was ready to return after a dominant performance in Canberra club rugby last week.

"He's been itching to get back on the park for the last month," Fisher said. "He brings aggression and physicality to our side, which will be valuable against a big, South African forward pack like the Sharks."

Jordan Smiler drops to the bench to make way for Auelua.

Brumbies: Jesse Mogg; Joe Tomane, Tevita Kuridrani, Christian Lealiifano, Robbie Coleman; Matt Toomua, Nic White; Ben Mowen (captain), Jarrad Butler, Fotu Auelua; Sam Carter, Scott Fardy; Ben Alexander, Stephen Moore, Scott Sio. Replacements: Josh Mann-Rea, Ruan Smith, Ruaidhri Murphy, Jordan Smiler, Tom McVerry, Michael Dowsett, Andrew Smith, Pat McCabe.
