Matt Toomua edged a number of his team-mates to lead the Greg Growden Medal Wallabies Player of the Year count after the team's inaugural match of the year against France in Brisbane on Saturday.

Greg Growden was pleased the Wallabies played as a team, saying there were few player standouts because "everyone did their job as required, constantly supporting each other" and "the belief in each other was obvious".

Toomua leads the count because he had a crucial role in so many of the Wallabies tries and in their best attacking moments, justifying Ewen McKenzie's decision to play him as the second playmaker at inside centre, but Israel Folau, Nic White, Sam Carter, Scott Fardy and three or four more team-mates - most notably James Slipper and stand-in captain Michael Hooper - could easily be sitting atop the standings.
