Australia scrum-half Will Genia will undergo ankle surgery on Tuesday which could keep him out for eight weeks.

Scans last week revealed that Genia, who plays his Super Rugby for Queensland Reds, had not recovered sufficiently from an ankle problem he sustained against the Hurricanes in April.

Genia has since played through the pain, but Australia head coach Ewan McKenzie said surgery was needed to ensure his fitness for the Rugby Championship in August.

"Will has demonstrated enormous mental fortitude to play through the injury although it has reached a point where it's important he gets it surgically repaired so that he can get back to 100 percent fitness," McKenzie said. "We've seen before how committed Will is when undergoing rehab and I would expect him to work hard to be available for selection when we begin our Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship campaign."
