Dave Dennis will miss the remainder of the Super Rugby season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the first half of the Super Rugby derby between New South Wales Waratahs and the Brumbies at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Scans on Sunday night revealed Dennis had ruptured the ACL in his right leg late in the first half of the Waratahs' 36-8 rout of the Brumbies and would undergo surgery this week, ruling him out of rugby for the year.

Waratahs coach Michael Cheika said he was confident Dennis would return to training in January, with Test skipper Michael Hooper taking over the captaincy role for the remainder of the season.

Dennis was helped off the pitch after falling awkwardly on his right knee following a tackle on Brumbies winger Henry Speight in the 35th minute.

The flanker has already had two knee reconstructions.
