The Brumbies and battling Greater Western Sydney Giants for sporting supremacy in Canberra, with the AFL club seemingly landing the first blow by scoring an Anzac Day match for 2015.

The news that the Giants would be playing on Anzac Day shocked the Brumbies after they were informed the Friday timeslot would be unavailable as it conflicted with a 100th anniversary commemoration of Gallipoli at the War Memorial. But the commemoration was postponed to Sunday, meaning the Friday timeslot was once again available.

Brumbies chief executive Doug Edwards questioned the local government's communication channels in handing the Giants the match.

"We're trying to create something in Canberra and you get the rug pulled out from underneath you really," Edwards told Fairfax Media. "We would have played on Anzac Day and we still may. For the government to have another game on Anzac Day in Canberra without even coming to us amazes us."

Fairfax Media reported the Brumbies are seeking to establish an Anzac Day fixture against New Zealand opposition, and they may even look to go head-to-head with the AFL by clashing with the Giants' timeslot.

"It's ideal not to have the two games up against each other, but we're the ones that showed the initiative. We're the ones trying to create something for Canberra, we're the local club," Edwards said.

Giants chief executive Dave Matthews believes all sporting codes competing in Canberra should work together and provide the nation's capital with what it deserves.

"We should always be working hard to make sure we don't clash with each other. Canberra deserves its presence in rugby union, rugby league and AFL, the less we conflict with each other from a scheduling point of view the better," he said.
