Wallabies captain Michael Hooper has been involved in an incident in Byron Bay that attracted police attention.

Hooper, 23, was out in the coastal town in northern New South Wales around 1.30am (EDT) on Tuesday, when a security guard reportedly saw his friend jump on a parked car on Bay Street and called police. Police said the pair were also seen pushing over a sign post. Hooper is believed to have repositioned the post later without damage.

"About 1.30am today, two men both aged 23 were walking along Bay St at Byron Bay," the police said. "Police were told a 23-year-old Manly resident jumped on the roof of a parked car. The two men were seen to push over a signpost that was later repositioned without damage.

"Legal action is expected to be taken against the Manly resident in relation to the damaged car. Inquiries are continuing."

Police are not expected to take action against Hooper.

Australian Rugby Union officials have been made aware of the incident, with a spokesman saying "information from NSW Police confirms Michael Hooper was not involved in any serious misdemeanour".

"Michael has been open and transparent with the police and Australian Rugby Union," the spokesman said. ""We don't expect any further action to be taken in relation to Michael's involvement in the matter."

Hooper became one of the youngest men ever to captain the Wallabies earlier this year, and he is favoured to retain the position ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup after leading the team on the recent tour to Europe under new coach Michael Cheika.
