The Hurricanes' Super Rugby title aspirations have taken a major hit with star playmaker Beauden Barrett ruled out for the next month with a knee injury.

Barrett left the field late in the Hurricanes' 29-23 win over the Crusaders with early expectations putting him out for only a week. But scans later revealed the All Blacks fly-half had suffered a grade-two medial tear, sidelining him for the next month.

"Obviously I'm gutted with the injury, but fortunately it's not season-ending for me," said Barrett. "I've been pretty lucky to have a good run without injury for a while, but it's now up to me to work hard on my rehab and make sure I'm ready to return at the business end of the season."

Barrett has been a key part of the Hurricanes' rise to the top of the Super Rugby standings this season, his combination with half-back TJ Perenara and second five-eighth Ma'a Nonu seeing the Wellington side score some of competition's finest tries.

Providing his rehab goes to plan, Barrett could return for the Hurricanes' R16 clash with the Crusaders in Nelson. Tom Marshall is likely to be Barrett's replacement at No.10 while youngster Otere Black has been recalled from the Oceania Junior World Championship on the Gold Coast as cover.
