Brumbies await fines as real story emerges

The five disgraced Brumbies involved in disturbances in Cape Town at the weekend will know their fate on Thursday afternoon (Aust).

A three-man ACT Rugby Union judiciary committee will announce the punishment, with heavy fines expected. However, police reports suggest original allegations and media reports concerning Joe Roff, Owen Finegan, Rod Kafer, Peter Ryan and Bill Young were exaggerated.

"The damage to the taxi, in my opinion, was not too serious and at no stage were any of the players arrested," Paul Manuel, Sea Point station commander, wrote in his report. "Their behaviour in my presence did not warrant any reason to suggest they acted like hooligans.

"Although it was obvious the players were under the influence of alcohol they were not aggressive. They appeared in a jovial mood and accompanied me inside without hesitation."

Even reports the players were seen in the back of a patrol van were embellished with Manuel adding there were no other vehicle available to take the players back to their team hotel.
