Key Crusaders to face fitness tests
May 24, 2000

A medical assessment on Thursday morning will determine whether three injured Canterbury Crusaders players travel to Canberra for Saturday's Super 12 rugby final against the ACT Brumbies.

All Blacks Justin Marshall and Norm Maxwell, and halfback understudy Aaron Flynn, will have their torn and strained calf muscles put to the test in a final workout.

Coach Robbie Deans will await those tests before naming the Crusaders team to play the Brumbies in the final at Bruce Stadium.

"We will not take anyone into the game who the medical staff don't have total confidence in," Deans said Wednesday.

Although Deans does not see it as ideal, the Crusaders team might contain provisional players when it is named.

"We will not go any closer than 24 hours before the game to make the call," Deans said.

"Ideally we'd like to make that tomorrow morning, but ultimately we'll take the medical advice on whether they feel a further 24 hours would make any difference."
