Former Queensland coach John Connolly could be poised to sign a lucrative contract with a French club within a week.

Connolly, who was dumped as Reds coach after 12 years this week, said it was very doubtful he would apply for the New South Wales job despite initial interest, and would head overseas next week to discuss several opportunities.

"There's been a bit of interest ... it's been good," Connolly said without revealing the source of the interest.

Connolly had an enviable record after 12 years at the helm of Queensland. He coached the Reds in 186 games, snaring 128 victories and four draws, moulding the side into one of the best provincial rugby units in the world.

Queensland secured the scalps of France in 1990 and England and Wales in 1991.
The Reds won the Super Six title in 1992 and back-to-back victories in the Super 10 in 1994 and 1995.

Despite winning almost 70 per cent of matches he coached for Queensland, a shattered Connolly was dumped in favour of former Wallaby hooker Mark McBain.
