Mains denies NSW application

Former New Zealand rugby coach Laurie Mains has denied that he had applied for the post of New South Wales coach which has gone to Bob Dwyer.

"New South Wales officials contacted me and we had a discussion that I would describe as a sounding-out process," Mains, who currently coaches the Cats Super 12 team, said in a statement released in Johannesburg.

"No offer was made to me and I advised that my first preference was to coach the Cats Super 12 team next year.

"If I was not given that position, I would be able to give further consideration to the NSW job," said Mains.

Former Australian coach Dwyer who led the Wallabies to the 1991 World Cup was appointed as New South Wales coach on Friday.
