Horan doubtful for Springbok test

Centre Tim Horan today admitted he was struggling to be fit for what would be his farewell rugby Test on Australian soil.

Australia, last gasp losers in an amazing Bledisloe Cup match against the All Blacks on Saturday night, regroup to face South Africa at Stadium Australia on Saturday week.

Horan was one of the world record 109,874 crowd in Sydney and is itching to get back on the field again. But he said today he would not rush his comeback from a serious foot injury.

Horan damaged ligaments in his right foot in Australia's first Test win over Argentina at Ballymore a month ago. He started jogging last weekend but said it would be a struggle to be fit enough to play against the Springboks.

The Wallabies have a number of injury worries, with centres Daniel Herbert and Jason Little, fullback Chris Latham, lock David Giffin and prop Glenn Panoho among the wounded.

Horan, who will join the Wallabies in camp at Coffs Harbour from Wednesday for more treatment on his injury, said he was just concerned with getting fit again rather than the sentimental notions about being back for his last home Test.

"If you get caught up in that you can come back too early and re-injure it," he said. "I mean, I'd love to be right for the Sydney game, but I'll just have to see how it goes.
"I'll struggle for it at this stage.

"But then it could improve and I've still got two weeks."

Horan is retiring from representative rugby at the end of the season to take up a two-year deal with leading English club side Saracens.

Australia has three Tests to play during the current Tri Nations campaign.

Besides the Sydney Test against the Springboks, there's the return Bledisloe Cup match in Wellington on August 5 and then a trip to South Africa to play the Springboks in Durban on August 26.

Horan's international road could finish at Kings Park in Durban, where he suffered a career-threatening knee injury playing for Queensland in the Super 10 final in 1994.
The 30-year-old sustained an injury to his left foot earlier this season but was back playing again in six weeks.

Horan said it was unlikely he would consider playing a game in Brisbane club rugby this weekend to test out the right foot.
