Newport leave it late to beat Bristol
August 14, 2000

Bristol were beaten by Newport in a pre-season friendly at Rodney Parade in a high scoring game in Saturday.

The welsh side ran out 35-24 winners to give the West Country side something to think about before the Zurich Premiership kick-off on Saturday against Rotherham.

Worse news was the probable ban for player-coach Dean Ryan after a yellow card, his third in the totting-up system, the others being at Caerphilly last week.

The win was claimed thanks to three tries in the closing minutes with David Gray on the flank, Springbok Gary Teichmann and Simon Raiwalui of Fiji taking the plaudits.

Newport are still awaiting for the return from fitness of Jason Jones-Hughes and Matt Mostyn.

Among the 4,000 crowd was Bristol's West Country rival's coach John Callard.
