Wallabies hit England - at last
September 16, 2000

Two of the Wallabies signed to put some steel into English club rugby have turned up, ready for action.

While the Zurich Premiership waits for its first sight of the injured centres Tim Horan (Saracens) and Jason Little (Gloucester), Australia's most capped flanker David Wilson will make his Premiership debut today for Harlequins, and prop Dan Crowley is on the bench for Leeds in National Division One, the next league down.

Crowley only joined Leeds this week, but goes straight into contention for the crunch match of the season so far against Worcester, the only other full-time team in what used to be division two of the Premiership - before the Zurich Premiership spilt off in the close season.

Both clubs have been heavily bankrolled in recent seasons in their efforts to reach the top flight, but it looks like it will be "winner takes all" at the end of the season. Only one can survive.

Phil Davies, the Leeds director of rugby, said Crowley, 35, and a veteran of three World Cup squads, had arrived too late to be considered to start. "It would not be fair to plunge him straight in," Davies said, "but he will take part at some stage."

Leeds kicked off their National Division One campaign with a solid 40-25 win over Birmingham Solihull 40-25 last week. Worcester beat Orrell, 47-8.

Wilson, who is due to take over the Quins captaincy from stand-in Keith Wood, stepped off the plane from Australia last Sunday morning. He takes his bow at the Stoop Memorial Ground a stone's throw from Twickenham against second-from-bottom club Bristol, in a match being televised live by Sky Sports.

"I'd say Quins are the best-known of all the English clubs, certainly where I come from," Wilson said. "It's a privilege to be asked to lead them."
