ARU chairman resigns
May 31, 2001

Australian Rugby Union chairman David Clarke is stepping down from the position and retiring from the Board of the ARU.

He said his commitments, including those as Chairman of listed companies, Macquarie Bank Ltd, Brian McGuigan Wines Ltd and Macquarie Goodman Management Ltd, contributed to his decision to retire.

Mr Clarke said the ARU was in 'very strong shape financially and had never been in better shape on the field'.

"With the Vodafone Rugby Super 12 win on Saturday by the Brumbies, Australian Rugby has now captured the only trophy in world rugby to have eluded it over the past three years," Mr Clarke said.

"As a former player and a fanatical supporter I'm pleased that I was able to be part of Rugby's resurgence. I know that we are only at the beginning of the national and international development of the game.

"Sponsorship is up 100 per cent over the last two years, revenue is up over 30 per cent and crowds and television ratings are at all time record levels."

The Board will meet on Friday to elect a new chairman. The vacancy on the Board will be filled at the next general meeting on August 31.

The ARU Board meets tomorrow, June 1st in Sydney where a new Chairman will
be elected.
