Waratahs side to face the Lions
June 20, 2001

Ten of the Australia A side that beat the Lions on Tuesday will have another crack at the tourists this Saturday.

The starting line-up features nine of the Aussie second string that defeated the Lions 28-25 in Gosford including Manuel Edmonds who did most of the damage with the boot and try-scorer Scott Staniforth.

The Waratahs' pack is made up almost entirely of Australian A-team forwards that gave the Lions such a torrid time on Tuesday although they will be coming up against a much changed Lions front eight, only Lawrence Dallaglio and Scott Quinnell retaining their places.

An interesting selection on the bench is former Wallaby Richard Tombs, who last played for the Waratahs in 1997.

After playing three years for English club Gloucester, Tombs returns last year but could find no interest at any of the Australian Super 12 sides.
Tombs first toured with the Wallabies as a 19-year-old in 1988. This year, Tombs has spent much of his time enjoying the lower grades with Sydney club Northern Suburbs.

"I threw out the proposition to all the provincial coaches when I came back from overseas and none of them were interested," Tombs told AAP. "I was quite happy to go back and play lower grades with Norths and enjoy the club scene.

"I'm enjoying the club scene but I happen to be captaining and coaching first grade. When I was first asked I thought do I really want to go through that pounding and physical test it's going to be," he said.

"But when I thought about it more and more I thought 'yeah I've done it for more than a decade now, so what's another one'."
