Flatley seeing red
July 13, 2001

Elton Flatley will be seeing red on Saturday night ... it's not that he's a hot head, it's just that a sea of red jerseys will be all over him at Stadium Australia on Saturday night.

The Queensland five-eighth replaces the injured Stephen Larkham for the series decider between the Wallabies and the Lions. And if the treatment handed out by the Lions to Larkham in the Second Test in Melbourne is any indication then Flatley is sure to be a little sore come Sunday morning.

It was no surprise when Lions defensive coach Phil Larder admitted Larkham was targeted. And Lions openside flanker Neil Back says it will be the same for Flatley.

"He's the first receiver. We've got to squash him," the England flanker said.

Flatley, who has impressed when coming off the bench during the series, says he'd prefer to play at five-eighth and accepts all the focus that comes with it. The 24-year-old made his debut for Australia in 1997 and in the Wallabies' first game this year started at inside-centre.

"They've been targeting the five-eighth but I'm ready for it. It's a Test match, you've got to be ready for it," Flatley said. "I'm more comfortable at five-eighth, I've been running there and been around the team all week, so it should be easy to slip in."

Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen said he has full confidence that Flatley will do the job for Australia.

"He's a great player, he's a player of the future and I think he'll do a good job," Macqueen said. "We've got a couple of games under our belt now and hopefully our cohesion
and structure will be better.

"We've got to stand up and be counted in these type of matches. We've not been found wanting before and I don't think we will this time."
