July 29, 2001

The Waratahs have signed a teenage Tongan born schoolboy who is being brought up by the family of Wallaby flanker George Smith.

Lei Tomiki, formerly a league centre of second row in Manly's youth programme and a Australian schoolboy representative, has signed a three-year deal with New South Wales.

The club intends the Scots College pupil to follow the same career path as Mark Gerrar, another Australian schoolboy who joined last season training with the senior side and playing club rugby at weekends.

The Waratahs will be hoping that whatever is was that turned Smith into the most exciting young forward in world rugby will have rubbed off on the youngster during his time with his family.
