Reivers snap up Laney

Edinburgh Reivers have signed Super 12 utility back Brendan Laney on a three year contract.

Laney, 27, who is qualified for Scotland, will join the club after he has completed the domestic season in New Zealand with Otago.

Nick Oswald, Edinburgh chief executive, told The Herald, "We have been tracking Brendan since being made aware of him two or three years ago and we regard him as a significant recruit to our squad.

"The bulk of his contract has been settled, but there are still one or two minor matters to be ironed out.

"We don't anticipate any problems and the hope is that he will come once his National Provincial Championship commitments with Otago are done and dusted."

"He promises to be a very useful addition to our party, being able to operate in so many positions. We also think he will provide a crucial physical presence to our back-line."

Laney qualifies for Scotland through his maternal grandmother, Marie, and he is sure to push for quick recognition from national coach Ian McGeechan.

Laney has played 44 games for the Highlanders and 68 for Otago's NPC side.
