'Spying' Aussie leaves Boks fuming
August 14, 2001

The Springboks were left fuming on Monday after an Australian was seen filming their moves ahead of Saturday's Tri-Nations Test against the Wallabies in Perth.

Media are permitted to film the Boks warming up, but as soon as they start practicing their moves the cameras must stop rolling.

Coach Harry Viljoen had already spoken to a Channel 7 cameraman when team doctor Craig Roberts and scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen spotted someone, allegedly Damien Holden, former Randwick coach and friend of Wallaby coaches Eddie Jones and Mark Ella, in the parking lot filming the scrumming sessions.

As Bok media liaison Mark Keohane walked over to the man, he threw his camera in the back seat and sped away. He was again seen filming later on, but again drove away when he was approached.

Accusations of spying was rife during the British Lions tour of Australia, with both camps blaming the other of underhand tactics to learn more about their moves.
