Latham tipped for recall
August 14, 2001

Former Wallaby fullback Chris Latham is the front-runner to replace dumped winger Andrew Walker for Saturday's Test against the Springboks in Perth.

Latham trained in Walker's place today providing coach Eddie Jones the option to rotate him with incumbent fullback Matt Burke. Latham started the Lions series at fullback, but was replaced by Burke for the Second Test in Melbourne.

The Queensland fullback played for New South Wales on the wing before joining the Reds and is likely to get the nod ahead of the Brumbies' Graeme Bond and Reds team-mate Ben Tune.

Walker was dropped from the squad for disciplinary reasons after leaving it in Sydney without notice to be with his family. The Wallaby squad was en route at the time to Perth after its Bledisloe Cup victory against the All Blacks in Dunedin.

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said Latham's kicking game could give him the edge over Tune or Bond.

Bond had a strong Super 12 for the Brumbies, while Tune made a strong comeback in Brisbane club rugby at the weekend with two tries playing at centre for GPS after a season plagued by injury.

"I think kicking ability is always important," Jones said. "Collectively the side needs to have good kicking ability and certainly Chris Latham is a very good kicker of the ball."

Jones expressed disappointment over the Walker incident, but said Australian rugby was fortunate to have quality players waiting to take their chance.

"Andrew has certainly done well this season, he's a talented player and he did particularly well in the Tests against the Lions. We were happy with his form, but the fortunate thing for us is there's a number of good players in the squad.

"Guys like Ben Tune, Graham Bond and Chris Latham are ready to step straight into the squad. We know Bondy's done well in Super 12 this year as a winger and he did well against the Maori when he came on.

"And Ben Tune as you know is a well renowned and certainly a world class winger when he's at his best. He's someone we're looking at as well."
