Matfield back for Boks
August 15, 2001

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen predictably included fit-again Victor Matfield in his team for Saturday's Tri-Nations Test against the Wallabies at Subiaco Oval in Perth.

Lock Matfield's inclusion is the only change to the team that beat the Wallabies 20-15 in Pretoria. Johan Ackermann, who deputised for the injured Matfield, falls out of the match 22.

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen is of the opinion that the more athletic Matfield provides the Boks with more lineout options than Ackermann.

Sharks lock Albert van den Berg, another absentee in Pretoria because of injury, makes his return to Test rugby as one of the seven substitutes. He takes over from exciting young loose-forward Johann van Niekerk.

Left wing Dean Hall, who injured his left ankle at training on Tuesday, has been included in the starting XV. Management will give him until match day to recover. If he is ruled out Thinus Delport is favoured to start on the wing with Andre Snyman moving onto the bench as backline cover.

"We're hoping Dean will be okay and believe he will be," Springbok backline coach Tim Lane said. "Dean is a guy who has always gone forward.

"He's strong with the ball and good on defence. It will be a loss, but Thinus is a similar kind of player. He's hungry and he hasn't had many opportunities."

Delport, who has been a regular at fullback for the Boks last year until Viljoen re-introduced Percy Montgomery this year, ran on the left wing after Hall had left the field on Tuesday. He doesn't have a lot of experience of wing play and his Super 12 and Test form this year has been less than impressive.

The tourists completed their match preparations with a closed session on Wednesday and on Friday the squad will enjoy a light run at the match venue.

Lock Mark Andrews takes his Tri-Nations appearances to a South African record of 21. Andrews and scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen will also play their 74th Test match, another Springbok record.

Saturday's is the 47th Test match between the two countries. The Boks have won 29 and lost 17.
