All Blacks dump Marshall, Brown
August 22, 2001

All Blacks coach Wayne Smith has cleaned out his inside-backs as part of four changes to the side for Saturday's Test against the Springboks in Auckland.

Halfback Justin Marshall and five-eighth Tony Brown make way for Byron Kelleher and Andrew Mehrtens as Smith looks for answers following the 23-15 loss to the Wallabies in Dunedin.

Lock Chris Jack will make his first appearance in the All Blacks starting 15 in place of Troy Flavell, who has been moved to the blindside flank to replace Reuben Thorne, who falls out of the squad completely.

Leon MacDonald will be at fullback, with Jeff Wilson moving to the right wing in place of Doug Howlett.

"One of the consequences of losing a game is that you look at every area including selection and we also looked at who we are playing against," Smith said. "This is a reflection of the fact that we have got our backs to the wall and we have to win this Test.

"Reuben Thorne is unlucky. He has done nothing wrong, it's one of the selection decisions you take.

"I feel a bit sorry for Justin Marshall and Tony Brown. These changes are the consequences of the bad ball they got in Dunedin and hopefully it won't happen to these two (Mehrtens and Kelleher).

"I felt we lacked a wee bit of decision-making ability to use the outside backs and it's not all the fault of those two players (Marshall and Brown) but these two guys have looked snappy in training and will make a difference.

"Troy Flavell moving to the side of the scrum gives us an opportunity to bring in Chris Jack who has got a great future and is a specialist lineout forward. Leon MacDonald will give us more attacking options at the back."
